SATURDAY - Kaleidoscopes for Kids! - 1pm to 2pm; This pretty kaleidoscope is shaped like a pyramid of glass. Inside we will put seashells and coral or, maybe your child has something of their own that they would like to put inside their pyramid. All the glass is pre-cut with safety tape over the sharp edges. Using strong aluminum tape we will put the kaleidoscopes together. Fall Fun in the Hocking Hills

Fall Fun in the Hocking Hills
Mother Nature is putting on a show and you're invited! The fall colors are expected to peak this weekend and the weather forecast of abundant sunshine and highs in the mid 60's set the perfect stage for Grandma Gatewood's Fall Colors Hike on Saturday, October 16.

Bring along a cool drink and celebrate the season’s colors. Meet with the naturalist at the Old Man’s Cave Visitor Center for a strenuous hike that spans roughly 6 miles of the Grandma Gatewood trail. We will be traversing the section that runs from Old Man’s Cave to Cedar Falls and back while enjoying the scenic beauty and cultural personality. This hike does include several hills and steps and is not recommended for the easily winded individual. (Approx. 3 to 4 hrs)

Not up to the hike? Enjoy the colors by volunteering in the Friends information tent to share with visitors the mission and projects of the Friends of Hocking Hills. Click here to volunteer.

Explore the history of the Hocking Hills region with a walk back through time dramatized by costumed interpreters along Ash Cave trail. Volunteers are needed to assist with serving lunch for the volunteers who will be participating in the historical reenactment and to provide information to visitors at the Friends tent. Christmas in Ash Cave 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Step away from the hectic holiday season and come bundled for the weather while enjoying a lighted stroll back to Ash Cave. Once you arrive at the cave warm with refreshments by an open fire. Listen to or join with our carolers, have the kids visit with an old fashion Santa or help to decorate our Christmas tree for wildlife. Volunteers are needed to greet visitors in the Friends tent. The workshop will officially begin early on Saturday morning, September 25, also at The Gathering Place, for an initial classroom session on camera operations and functions and effective use of lenses for the variety of photographic situations often approached for nature and landscape photography. There will then be a short outing to either Cedar Falls or RoseLake for practical application of lessons learned in class. Saturday afternoon will consist of instruction on the artistic aspects of nature and landscape photography as well as digital editing and workflow. Following dinner the group will reconvene for late afternoon and early evening landscape photography at AshCave. Sunday's schedule will start very early for landscape photography at sunrise from the hilltop garden behind the Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls. There will be a short classroom session followed by trips to Cedar Falls, Old Man's Cave and either Conkles Hollow or Rock House, depending upon the instructors assessment of the shoot conditions and subjects to be photographed. Sunday afternoon will consist of image critiques in the classroom as well as a presentation on the business and marketing aspects of professional nature photography. October 3rd - Hocking Hills Fall Poker Run - 9am to 3pm; Organized by the Friends of the Hocking Hills State Park, the tour will begin at Lake Logan State Park Beach with a pancake breakfast and end at Millstone Southern Smoked BBQ. First bike out at 10 a.m., last bike out at 11 a.m. Covering approximately 100 miles, motorcyclists or motorists will stop at many parks and lakes, including AshCave. At each stop they receive a poker card and the participant with the best hand at the end wins the $300 cash prize! New this year is a chance to win an additional $400 in cash at bonus cash stops. Registration, which includes the pancake breakfast, is $25 for a single rider and $30 for a driver and passenger. Proceeds will benefit programs and special projects at the HockingHillsState Park.

FRIDAY - "Charity Challenge" - 6pm to 9pm; A dozen local charities and non-profit agencies serving Hocking County and Southeastern Ohio will be participating in the first ever "Charity Challenge." The concept is simple: local charities/non-profits will be competing for votes to support their particular cause. Ten dollars ($10) will buy a ballot that is used to get entry to the Bowen House that evening where it is cast for a favorite charity or non-profit agency represented there. Each $10 ballot cast raises $10 for that particular charity or non-profit (un-cast ballots purchased and/or not voted are divided equally among the charities/non-profits). While individuals are at The Bowen House, they can enjoy an evening of live music & food. Performing that night will be "Tom & Larry" Thrush (classic rock); "Michael Maher and the Dahlias" (rhythm & blues), and "Nick Delmatto & Co." (jazz). The Logan "KFC" & "Little Caesars Pizza" are providing a sampling of their food to go along with a variety of popular snacks and beverages.
