Touched by Conflict SE Ohio the Civil War
Mon/Wed/Thu/Fri/Sat 930am-5pm. Sun 12-5pm. Closed Tuesdays,
New Years Day, Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas. Using
southeastern Ohio as a model, this exhibit explores events in Ohio
leading to the Civil War, local support of the war effort,
recruitment, service in various campaigns, and the private lives of
both officers and private soldiers as they performed in campaigns
in various armies. The exhibit also examines human costs of the
conflict on Ohio communities and how veterans were assimilated
back into home life following military duty. Central to the
presentation is the use of the collection of Ohioan Larry Strayer.
Strayer is one of the foremost collectors of Civil War photographs
in the United States. He also has amassed a significant collection of
artifacts relating to the war, particularly from communities in
southeast Ohio. This exhibit, a cooperative venture between a
number of area institutions and the Ohio Historical Society,
highlights the stories of individuals who served in many capacities
during the war, including soldiers, women from relief associations,

Gorgeous Threads A World of Textiles
10am-4pm Tue-Sat. Textiles soften the hard edges of our world
and serve to identify us. They allow us to decorate our homes and
our bodies. They are often an expression of our artistic visions and
our social relationships. This exhibition points up the great variety
of materials, colors, techniques and uses around the world.
Included are items from Africa, Asia, the Americas and Europe.
Some of these fabrics have great visual impact when seen from a
distance, others are a tour-de-force of detail and complicated
structure. Delight in this presentation of a sampling of the myriad
fabrics produced globally and housed in central Ohio collections.

Hand-Feeding Hummingbirds
1-3 pm. Naturalists have been feeding hummingbirds at Lake Hope
State Park since 1995. A combination of commercial feeders and
natural tube flowers are used. Visitors can learn about
Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds and attempt to hand feed them!
Stop by anytime during that period to give it a shot. No
reservations are required and our hummingbird program is free of
charge but we strongly encourage donations to the Friends of Lake
Hope. Parking is located near the nature center. Hand-feeding of
Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds at Lake Hope began when Naturalist
Dave Sapienza was replacing a filled feeder and a hummingbird
zoomed in for a drink. A few visitors began attempting to feed
hummingbirds by hand in 2001 and in 2002 the program became
official. For the next couple of years, the program drew a lot of
attention from park visitors and from Ruby-Throated
Hummingbirds! As many as 10 feeders were maintained by the
nature center's staff, being cleaned and refilled daily. As much as
80 pounds of sugar were used each summer. By 2006, the
program had grown to out of control proportions as the media
caught on to the event and featured it in The Cleveland Plain
Dealer, Cincinnati Enquirer, Columbus Dispatch, Ohio Magazine,
Birds and Blooms, Better Homes and Gardens and Midwest Living.
The program was also featured on television's WSAZ in Huntington,
WV and the Ohio Division of Wildlife's PBS show, Wild Ohio.
